Ask:
My 9 yr old son will not cut his hair. I don't have problem with that and always believed in picking your battles and hair was just not worth batteling about. BUT lately, he will not even brush it and gets mad with I tell him too. It looks horrible. What should I do? Should I tell him if he can't keep it looking decent it will be cut? Or do I just pretend I don't know him?

Well, we have always gotten our hair cut every 4 weeks. I make appointments for us all and we all go at the same time. So, I haven't been faced wtih this. When the kids do not want to get their hair cut, then I tell them that they will have to go home and sit in their rooms until they decide to get their hair cut. When they get sent to their rooms, it is without any tv or electronics (ie PS2, gamboys, radio, etc). One time of doing that cured my kids.
You could always tell him if he wants to grow it long, then that is his choice. BUT, if he doesn't keep it looking good, you will buzz it all off so you don't have to look at it all messed up and he doesn't have to keep it combed.
Good luck!

This truly is a personal decision. In my house, at 9 years old he will still do his hair the way I see fit (it's my job to make sure he is still "cool", though. No nerds! I don't think 9 year olds have the mental capacity and judgement yet for that decision, but that's just me.
BUT, that said, what other battles are there? Is it worth it? Would this be out of the blue? If so, that would be a tough one. But you are still the parent. Your house, your rules.

It just depends, family to family...
I too make the hair appts every month for my boys. They have to comply with the dress code at their school, so they know they can't have long/out of control hair.
In the summertime, sometimes my older son doesn't want to cut his hair for a couple of months and that's fine with me. It's just hair and I figure, you have to pick your battles. He is fully aware that if there a situation (a funeral, a wedding etc) he will have to get it cut asap. He's fine with that.

My 12 year old, almost 13 year old ds has been "fighting us" for a few years now. We let it go to a certain extent, but about every 3 months, we DO make him get it cut. I don't make him cut it as short as I want it, but he has to meet me in the middle!
Answer:
I can't believe you guys get hair cuts every month!! I would be going broke (more than I already am!) My boys hair grows until it is too long to stand or is in their eyes and then we cut it. Of course, my dh had hair all the way down his back for years until recently.

My ds (14) goes back and forth...he lets it grow for most of the school year but then buzzes it for the summer (too hot in Florida). So it never gets too long....but his is very straight so even if he doesn't brush it....it doesn't look too bad. The worst thing he deals with is bed head...but then he just puts a baseball cap on until he gets to school and it is "flattened out".
I agree with the " if you are going to keep it long, then you need to keep it neat or it will be cut".....you could always threaten to cut it off while he is sleeping...LOL
Answer:
Send him over! I just got done cutting my boys' hair in the front yard as they sat in the highchair eating suckers.
I cut my dh and kids' hair and I pay to have mine cut as least often as possible!
Answer:
I think you are right that its not something to fight with over long hair but I would make a requirement of having long hair keeping it brushed.
