Why is something like BitTorrent legal, but such programs as Limewire, and Kazaa are not?

Ask:
I’m confused on how each work, and why things that use Torrents are legal and other programs that download stand-alone files are not. Can anyone clear up these questions for me?

Answer:
LimeWire is legal, because it's just people sharing files, it's not selling music.
Answer:
I don't quite understand, I thought any distribution of music without the permission of the song writer/singer was against the law, isnt' that in essense what Limewire does? And someone told me that using programs like uTorrent, BitTorrent, etc to get music, movies, games and such was legal as well.
Answer:
downloading music is not legal no matter what program is used. torrents are legal if your not downloading copyrighted material, but if you are then that is illegal. limewire is legal if you are getting files that are free for download, but once again if it is copyrighted and distrubuted without permission it is just as illegal. kazza was junk with so many viruses it wasnt even smart. i wont even cover it. but here is how a torrent works: you download from many people diffrent parts of the file and then put it together through the torrent program. this way, anyone wishing to sue has no company, like napster to go after(napster is now legit however). this means that the company will likely lose more money trying to sue than they will get. any questions?
Answer:
Nope, think that about covers it, thanks a bunch!
