Catholicism is a split off of christianity. While it does follow Jesus' teachings, it started to enforce more of a dogmatic control over its followers, hence the creation of the protestants. Peter's actual version of christianity is hardly followed any more it seems.

Catholocism isn't a split-off of Christianity. Originally it was just the one Catholic Church, in the time of the Middle Ages. Then during the Renaissance, Martin Luther, originally just wanting to change the corruption of the Catholic Church at that time, started a whole "protest" (hence the name protestant) and caused a revolution in the Catholic church in which many followers of Catholocism split off from the Catholic church and started their own religions which were generally all based on the same teachings of the Bible and Catholcism. But not corrupted like the Catholic church was at the time.
