How to pacify a puppy when travelling in the car?

Ask:
We drove the puppy to the vet this morning and she was pretty freaked out about being in the car. We tried to set up her crate to be as comfortable as possible, but she still whimpered quite a bit. We had the windows open, so it couldn’t have been that she was too hot, and we weren’t driving like maniacs. When we originally brought her home from the breeder, she cried quite a bit as well, but we thought it was separation anxiety, with her being away from her pack.

Answer:
Here are some tips: 1.) Congrats on deciding to carry your puppy in a crate! Next time you take it on a trip, cover the crate with a light blanket. For some animals, especially if they are very young (and most cats) being in a car is very disturbing. They feel the movement, different smells, different noises, and when looking out the window it seems to them as if objects are "flying" by. A crate with a protective blanket will calm them down and feel more secure and save. Don't forget to put a chew toy inside :) 2.) Some dogs get motion sickness and feel uncomfortable. If it's a puppy I'd recommend 1/4 to 1/2 gingerbread cookie every hour or an hour and a half. The ginger calms their stomach. If you find sugar free ones, even better. Hope that help!
