I’m trying to make english custard, and just about every recipe I see says I need a vanilla bean. However, I don’t have one, and have no idea even where to get one. So my question is: can I just use vanilla extract instead? And if so, how many drops?
Answer:
you can get vanilla beans from any grocery store its in the spice isle. they are about 7.99 here in south cali. for.... id say 5 i think. im not sure if you can use vanilla extract.. but i can assure you that there is a taste difference.. but i love cooking so i know the difference, you might not.
Answer:
MMMM...interesting question. Well, what does the recipe say to do with the vanilla bean? You would probably have to ask your local farmstand if they sell vanilla beans (they look like tiny shrivled up chili peppers). They may also be in the baking aisles at a local store. If not there, try a local ethnic food store. But, in order to tell you if you can use vanilla extract (in liquid form or not) i need to know what the original recipe wants you to do with the vanilla. i have never made custard before and putting a liquid in can very well change the way the custard forms. Don't you have to bake custard in the oven? Let me go find a recipie.
Answer:
Sub 1 tsp Extract for 1 bean. will work just fine, not quite as deep flavor, but the trick will be done.
Answer:
HeHeHe! I was just going to say that from reading the other recipes, you should be ok to use the liquid vanilla! I never made custard before, but thanks to you, maybe I will!!

This is interesting. I will have to try a vanilla bean one day. i did not know the flavor was so drastic between the two! Can someone tell me why the taste is so different?
Answer:
Just make sure you don't use imitation vanilla!! It's different I guess for the same reason perfume doesn't stay on all day. It stays pretty well protected by the beanpod, but as soon as you take it out, it loses its smell/flavor to the air around it.
Answer:
AHHH! Makes sense, makes sense! Thanks! ;o)

Van beans are fermented for a long time, up to a 1 or more some times, and the flavor depends on the region. I think madagascar van bans are the the best. vanx is usualy junk, you can find some decent stuff, but it will cost ya. Vanilla beans are the 3rd most expensive spice in the world
