Ask:
smoking and plants
my son is working on a science fair project. What effect does cigarette smoke have on household plants? We don't smoke and was wondering, if we enclose the plants in a "homemade" little greenhouse and just burn the cigs., would that be the same as second hand smoke or give the same results? Thank you
Answer:
smoking and plants
That's an interesting topic.
A greenhouse, especially if it is particularly small would cause a lot of excess heat to build up, both due to the proximity of the plants to the heat of the cigarettes and the trapping of the heat due to the greenhouse effect. Also, instead of dispersing into the environment, the chemicals in the smoke would remain trapped in close proximity to the plants. I would imagine that the plants would get a more concentrated effect from the cigarette within the greenhouse than typical second hand smoke in nature.

Good question. If I can remember house plants purify the air because they thrive on intake of co2 and release 02. I don't know about an overdose of co2 though in a confined structure. I recall they form sugars out of co2 and water using light as the energy source. Thus (photosynthesis) is what this is called.
You might use the google search bar also.
Good Luck on the project! :)
