After numerous test and evaluations my 6 yr old son was diagnosed with early onset (early childhood) bipolar disorder. He was put on Abilify and Tenex and did great for a while but then he stopped sleeping he was getting only about 2-3 hours of sleep a night this went on for about a month or so finally his doctor put him on seroquel and that put him to sleep but he was very violent during the day and was also showing signs of tardive dyskinesia so i immeadiately took himm off. He is back to normal during the day on his abilify and concerta but he is back to not sleeping again. I do not want to give him any dopamine blockers like seroquel is there anything OTC that I can give him? (:confused: :unsure: He is 57 inches tall and 52 pounds and has a very high tolerence for any medication)

As with any mental illness and esp. in a child, stopping medications is not recommended unless the Dr. says so. I don't think there is anything over the counter then can help bipolar and its many phases. You are the best one to notice good or bad changes on medications and by alerting his Dr. he can come to a medication regime that will help. With medication and mental therapy, support etc. he can have a normal life. Please inform your Dr. you stopped his medication and work with him to better help your son.

Thanx yes i consulted his doctor before taking him off of the meds he was put in the hospital for 10 days because of it and im not really looking for anything otc to help with the moodswings just something to help him sleep
